Warm-Hearted Awareness in Yin Yoga

A 6-month intimate intensive for Yin Yoga teachers with Sarah Powers (100 Yoga Alliance hours). A once a month course with only 24 participants.

An integration of subtle body attunement, psychological inquiry and mind training

Prerequisites:
You will be asked to complete a separate application to attend this course, which will include questions about your prior trainings.

For IYI Students: With permission, these hours may be counted towards your Insight Yoga Institute certification.

You must have completed the following in order for your application to be considered. Preference will be given to those who have a minimum of 500 hours of training or more.

  • Level I Insight Yoga Teacher Training Intensive: Yin/Yang Yoga Mindfulness Meditation Training with Sarah or an IYI endorsed teacher — (60 – 100 hours/8 or 10-day)
  • Level II Insight Yoga Teacher Training Intensive: Mindfulness and Inner Practices in Yin Yoga (5-day)
  • Yin Yoga/Anatomy Teacher Training with Paul Grilley — 25 hours
    • If unable to study with Paul, then completion of 25 hours with one of the approved teachers listed on the IYI Program Requirements page will also be accepted.
  • At least one 5-day or more silent retreat (preferably with Sarah and Ty Powers)
  • A 200-hour Yoga Training
  • Some psychological work: either in therapy or in one of the retreats listed under the Psycho-Spiritual Inquiry section on the IYI Program Requirements page.

Course Description:
Sarah Powers established this in-depth training for yoga teachers who are interested in developing and deepening their experience of and the capacity to teach the contemplative aspects of a body/mind practice. She is limiting it to only 24 students in order to provide everyone with a more personalized, supportive environment so she can track your learning and teaching style. She is interested in helping support you in expanding your knowledge of the Buddha Dharma and self inquiry, and how to share these teachings in a yin or restorative yoga class. The emphasis of this training will be geared toward strengthening not only your own physical and meditation practice through inner work and group processing, but also evolving your capacity to share these ancient teachings in an intimate, skillful way.

As a community for these 6 months, each person who is accepted into this program will contribute to cultivating a secure setting for everyone to feel safe to further unwind protective patterns we each carry, while intentionally generating authentic compassion, self care and insight. Insight into the limiting patterns that you fall back on when teaching, and insight into how you can sustain genuine authenticity when you teach, as well as in more aspects of your day to day life. So many of us learn, study, reflect and teach on our own, with no support or feedback. Yet our process of maturing can be greatly accelerated when we participate in an intimate community that helps us renew our dedication and determination each day, and that patiently and kindly encourages our insights which can lead to new behaviors that change the way we feel and function.

As each class will include teaching a short dharma theme by each person, we may find a renewed appreciation for the ways in which we dare to risk exposing ourselves which can then entrain an increased willingness to explore further. The habit of putting ourselves out there at our edge, will morph into verbal and emotional capabilities we never knew we had. As we learn to shake ourselves from our comfort zone, we will each become more familiar with revealing our capacities, while at times exposing our anxieties and vulnerabilities. Individually and together as a group, we will empathically explore our heights and our depths, our strengths and our weaknesses.

Buddhist Topics that will be covered in the training include:

Month 1 – The Four Mind-Changings
Month 2 – The Four Noble Truths
Month 3 – The Four Foundations of Mindfulness
Month 4 – Working with Obstacles
Month 5 – The Four Immeasurables
Month 6 – Prajna Paramita

Course Outline:
The first section of class will be mainly silent, geared toward personal practice of yin yoga with a particular contemplation offered each month connected with the themes listed above. We will also practice pranayama and a 24-minute meditation.

The second section of class will be listening to a dharma talk by Sarah on the specified theme with time for questions and a group discussion.

In the third section of class we will break into diads and contemplate with each other out loud, developing our capacity to reveal our inner experience with others, while also developing therapeutic listening while receiving each other.

The fourth and final section of class will be devoted to breaking into groups of four. Each person will have the opportunity to share a 10-minute prepared dharma talk within your small group. Sarah will listen to different groups each month, giving feedback as she moves among you. She will also have an assistant teacher at each class who will support the students both in the class setting, as well as by speaking with each of you on Skype in the times between each months meeting.

Mentoring:

Each participant will have a monthly mentoring session with Sarah, Ty or Sarah’s assistant. If you are already accepted into the Insight Yoga Institute and have an assigned mentor, these sessions will be in addition to your regularly scheduled sessions and additional costs will apply – see Cost section.

Outside Coursework and Retreat Requirements:
Outside reading and short essays will be assigned throughout the training.

You will be required to go on a silent retreat with Sarah and Ty during or just after this course.

Ty will also lead an optional (by donation) evening meditation session each month in London.
