Insight Yoga, Blending the Practices of Yoga and Buddhism

10 Day Thailand Retreat (RETREAT FULL)

Please join us for the first Yin Yoga Community Retreat with Sarah and Ty Powers and Paul and Suzee Grilley in Thailand at Tao Gardens Resort.

Chiang Mai, Thailand
Dec 12-22, 2008

meditation hall Yoga enhances the vibrancy of our body, heart and mind. Meditation cultivates a realization of our essential nature—our innate clarity. Both systems bring us home to ourselves. Taking time away from our busy schedules to commit our attention to our inner development naturally accelerates our evolution, while also bringing us into new and refreshed ways of being with ourselves and our life.

We look forward to gathering many of the International Yin Yoga teachers and practitioners (beginners welcome) for this special retreat. Sarah, Ty, Paul and Suzee will alternate leading classes in Yin or Yang style practices as well as Mindfulness Meditation classes. Each day we will have several meditation sessions, and two yoga classes interspersed with time to enjoy the healing arts and medical facilities at Tao Gardens. We will also explore the surrounding area of Chaing Mai together, visiting an ancient Buddhist temple, riding Elephants, and visiting the famous Night Market.

Yin yoga is an essential complement to our active, strong practices and lives. The Yin style keeps the body supple at its core while encouraging stagnate chi (prana) to flow throughout the joints, balancing the organ and meridian systems.

This retreat will be a rare opportunity to study with both Sarah and Paul, as well as to experience the diverse ways of practicing Yin and Yang Yoga in a setting like Tao Garden and the surrounding area of northern Thailand. This retreat will give you an opportunity to enjoy Paul's articulate and humorous style, Suzee's graceful and flowing sequences and Sarah's meditative and integral approach. Ty will lead the morning and evening mindfulness meditations.

Paul Grilley has been practicing and teaching since 1979. He learned the Yin Yoga of Paulie Zink in 1988. He originally studied anatomy and physiology with Dr. Garry Parker, then went on to study kinesiology at UCLA and acupuncture theory at Emperor's College in Santa Monica. He first met Dr. Motoyama in 1989. Since then his understanding of Yoga and Meditation has been deepened by Dr. Motoyama's Meridian Theory, which states that the connective tissues of the body are the meridians of acupuncture and that they are regulated by energy centers in the spine called chakras.

Suzee Grilley is a former member of the Nikolais Dance Theatre with whom she toured the world. Suzee is artistic director of the DanceSpace, in Ashland. Drawing from over 20 years of experience, Suzee teaches modern dance technique, improvisation, composition and Capoeira for dancers. Paul and Suzee live in Ashland, Oregon and can be reached at: www.paulgrilley.com

Sarah Powers began teaching in 1987. She interweaves the insights and practices of Yoga and Buddhism into an integral practice to enliven the body, heart and mind. Her yoga style blends both a Yin sequence of long held poses to enhance the meridian and organ systems, combined with a flow or Yang practice, influenced by Viniyoga, Ashtanga, and Iyengar teachings. Sarah feels that enlivening the physical and pranic bodies, as well as learning to open to our emotional afflictions is paramount for preparing us to deepen and nourish insights into our essential nature--a natural state of awareness. She draws from her studies in Transpersonal Psychology, as well as her in-depth training in the Vipassana, Tantric and Dzogchen practices of Buddhism. She teaches trainings and silent retreats with her husband Ty. They live with their teen-age daughter Imani Jade in Marin, California.

Sarah, Imani & TyTy Powers has been practicing yoga since 1987 and managing yoga retreats since 1992. Ty is a graduate of the Dharma Leader training program at Spirit Rock Meditation Center, under the guidance of Jack Kornfield, James Baraz and Ajahn Amaro. He has been co-teaching diversity daylongs at Spirit Rock for a few years. His primary teacher is Tsoknyi Rinpoche.
